NBA Playoffs, Pistons Even Series with Boston 1-1

Thursday, May 22

Game 2, Boston. I think a lot of us thought the Celtics would win this one. Even though Ray
Allen found his shot, scoring 25 points, it wasn't enough as the Detroit Pistons knocked out the Celtics 103-97. Statistically, both teams played pretty even. As Rick Hamilton said in the post game press conference, the Pistons had a lot of motion in their offense and scored well. They ended up going to the free throw line and making 28-32 shots. Boston made 22-25 freebies. This might have made the difference in this game. Detroit was hitting big shots from the outside. The Celtics beat them in the paint 36-24. This was a close game most of the way with the team with fewer mistakes coming out on top. The Pistons had 4 more steals than the Celts (9 total) and 3 less turnovers (9 total). Maybe these "little" stats made a big difference. Ray Allen broke out of his slump by making 9 of 16 field goals. His two all-star companions Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett scored 26 and 24 respectively, but the rest of the Celtics didn't contribute much. Tayshaun Prince had a sub-par game for Detroit, making only 5-15 shots for 14 points, but he had a lot of back up. Antonio McDyess had 15 points, 8 rebounds. Rasheed Wallace scored 13 with 10 rebounds. Rip Hamilton led the Pistons with 25 points (10-12 free throws). Chauncey Billups bounced back from game one with 19 points and 7 assists. Rookie Rodney Stuckey chipped in 13. It's going to take a complete team effort for Boston to win in Detroit, but it can be done. Next: Game 3, Saturday, Detroit, 8:30 p.m. (ABC).
