NBA Playoffs, Lakers Edge Spurs to Take 3-1 Lead

Tuesday, May 27

Game 4, San Antonio. I don't think any of us saw this coming. The Los Angeles Lakers win on the road against the Spurs (93-91)! The Spurs had a chance to win it at the end with :02 left but Brent Barry couldn't get off his three-point shot. It also looked like he was fouled by Derek Fisher but no foul was called. That's how close it was to having a tied series. Instead the Lakers now lead the series 3-1. Los Angeles won this game with better shooting from the field (44%-40%), although they only made 3 three-pointers and only had 19 free throw attempts (making 14). The Spurs made ten more from the line than the Lakers, making 24 of 26. The Lakers outscored the Spurs 38-36 in the paint and out-rebounded them 46-37 (with 13 offensive boards). Besides being out-played in those areas, San Antonio connected on only 7 of 24 three-point attempts. Brent Barry sparked the Spurs with five of those threes and scored 23 points on the night. Tim Duncan had an outstanding 29 points and 17 rebounds and Tony Parker added 23 points also, with 9 assists. Manu Ginobili was a non factor, going 2-8 from the field for 7 points. The Spurs' bench didn't help much either. Los Angeles got a splendid game from Kobe Bryant as usual. He scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Lamar Odom struggled again but still had 16 points, 9 rebounds. Vladimir Radmanovic scored 11 points and Pau Gasol added 10 points and 10 boards. San Antonio didn't play that bad of a game and they almost won it. I don't think this series is over yet. If any team can win on the road and come back 3-1, it's the Spurs. S.A. lives and dies, however, with the three-point shot. If they fail to make them in the next games in the series, they will lose the series. The Lakers have cut down their scoring in the lane, so they're going to have to find a way to score. In this game, L.A. made 38 field goals compared to 30 for the Spurs. The Lakers lead the series 3-1. Next: Game 5, Thursday, Los Angeles, 9 p.m. ET, TNT.
