NBA Playoffs, Celtics Smother Pistons in Game 1

Tuesday, May 20

Game 1, Boston. The Boston Celtics used their defense to slow down the Detroit Pistons and take game one of the Eastern Conference Finals 88-79. On the other end, the Celtics made 8 more field goals than Detroit and out-shot them 52%-42%. Boston's threes weren't falling, however, and they spent much of the game driving to the basket, where they outscored the Pistons in the paint 44-22. Only 6 three-point shots were made in the entire game, 4 of them by Detroit. Boston also had more assists, 27-15. Chauncey Billups was back in the lineup after suffering a hamstring pull in the Orlando series, but only scored 9 points. Tayshaun Prince led the Pistons with 16. Both Rasheed Wallace and Richard Hamilton struggled. Wallace made only 3 of 12 shots for 11 points and Hamilton had 15 points on 5 of 13 shooting. Antonio McDyess had a respectable 14 points and 11 rebounds. On the Celtics side, Kevin Garnett was the man with 26 points and 9 rebounds. Paul Pierce had a good game with 22 points (he handled the ball a lot in this game). Rajon Rondo scored 11 with 7 assists. Ray Allen is still struggling with his shot and seems to have lost his confidence. He was 3 of 10 for 9 points. Kendrick Perkins grabbed 10 rebounds. It was a nice effort by the Celtics, but they're going to have to be at their best each game to get past Detroit. Next: Game 2, Thursday, Boston, 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).
