NBA Playoffs, Celtics and Lakers Take 3-2 Leads

Wednesday, May 14

Game 5, Boston. The Boston Celtics out shot the Cleveland Cavaliers and played more as a team to overcome the Cavs 96-89. This was perhaps their best shooting performance in the series as Paul Pierce led the way with 29 points. Kevin Garnett had 26 points and 16 rebounds while Rajon Rondo scored 20 with 13 assists. The Celts also out rebounded Cleveland 38-30. Boston's only fault was committing 27 fouls to the Cavs 18. Fortunately, the Cavaliers only made 28-41 (68%) free throws. LeBron James had one of his better games last night, scoring 35 points, but got little help from his team except for Delonte West who had 21 points. The fact that they had only 11 assists in the game (compared to Boston's 25) means that they didn't play well as a team. Boston leads the series 3-2. Game Six: Friday, Cleveland, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN).

Game 5, Los Angeles. The Utah Jazz played their best game in L.A. so far in the series, but it wasn't enough to win, and the Lakers took game five 111-104. At the end of three quarters the score was tied at 81-81, but Utah went flat down the stretch to lose the fourth quarter 23-30, and the game. The Jazz again had more fouls (31-20) and the Lakers made 34 of 42 free throws (81%).
Carlos Boozer had a sub-par game for Utah, missing a lot of quick shots. The Lakers have disrupted his game throughout the series. Ronnie Brewer had a great game for the Jazz (16 points) and should have played in the fourth quarter instead of Kyle Korver. I think Brewer had more spark. Deron Williams scored 27 with 10 assists and Okur had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lakers had to have gotten a real scare from the Jazz in this game, but they kept their poise when it counted. Kobe Bryant, despite having back problems, still managed 26 points. Lamar Odom had his usual (22 points, 11 boards),  Paul Gasol scored 21 and 8 assists (yes assists) and Vladimir Radmanovic added 15 points. L.A. leads the series 3-2. Next: Game 6, Utah, 10:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).
