NBA Playoffs, Celtics Subdue Cleveland to Advance

Sunday, May 18

Game 7, Boston. Paul Pierce out-played LeBron James and the Boston Celtics out-played the Cleveland Cavaliers 97-92 to win their hard-fought series 4-3. Boston excelled the Cavs in every way, but still had to hang-on to beat them. LeBron played a much better game statistically, making 14-29 shots for 45 points, but Pierce did one better by making 13-23 field goals, 4-6 threes and 11-12 free throws (including two crucial ones down the stretch to ensure victory) for a total of 41 points. Kevin Garnett didn't shoot as well but had 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Celtics, who now advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against Detroit, have had a tough road in the playoffs with close series that have gone seven games. With all that Danny Ainge has done to build a winning franchise, it would be disappointing not to win the Eastern Conference title and go to the NBA Finals. Next: Game 1, vs. Detroit, Tuesday, Boston, 8:30 p.m. (ESPN).
