NBA Playoffs, Lakers Win the West, Oust Spurs

Thursday, May 29

Game 5, Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant's ability to score as many points as two or three regular players combined, was the difference in this game. Kobe scored 39 points last night to lead L.A. in closing out San Antonio 100-92. The Lakers win the series 4-1 and now play either Boston or Detroit for the NBA crown. San Antonio gave them a good competitive series despite the final outcome. The Lakers out-played them just enough to win this hard- fought game and series. The Spurs' great shooting from the past never materialized. Their three stars, Duncan, Parker and Ginobili were not consistent in the series. S.A. held their own from the three-point line in this game, but were out-scored again in the paint 52-36. My gut feeling is that they need more inside scoring to help Tim Duncan. Maybe they will find that player in the draft or via free agency. The Lakers, on the other hand, will continue to flourish in the future. I think they will even win the NBA Championship this year. I think that as Kobe continues to involve the other players, it will be hard to beat them. Next: Lakers play the Celtics or Pistons. That series continues tonight: Game 6, Detroit, 8:30 p.m. ET ESPN.
