NBA Playoffs, Celtics Stomp Pistons on the Road, Take 2-1 Lead

Saturday, May 24

Game 3, Detroit. This was a game Boston had to win after losing to the Pistons at home in game two. And they did 94-80! It was an impressive win because many, including myself, felt that the Celtics had regressed by losing game two and were already in danger of losing the series. Boston clearly out-played the Pistons from the start to put those fears to rest. Last night they had six players scoring in double figures. Kevin Garnett led them with 22 points and 13 rebounds (his usual double-double) while Ray Allen scored 14. As a team the Celtics shot 46% and held Detroit to 38%. Neither team shot well from the 3-point line and were about even in free throws made. Boston dominated in the paint 34-24 and in rebounds 44-28. The Pistons had some bright spots though. They blocked 6 more shots and had 5 more steals. In the end, they couldn't make enough shots. Piston stars Tayshaun Prince and Chauncey Billups only scored 10 points combined, which is unbelievable. Rip Hamilton again had to lead them with 26 points (10 of 10 free throws). Rasheed Wallace scored a college-like 12 points and Rodney Stuckey scored 17. Was Boston's defense that good? or did the Pistons think they could win at home just by showing up? They clearly did not play with the fire that the Celtics had. Boston now leads the series 2-1. Either team can still win this and it will probably take seven games to determine who does. Next: Game 4, Monday, Detroit, 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN).
